Episode #220: The Dirty Mayor

Pre-gaming for NYC Cider Week, Dan cracks open Burlington, Vermont-based Citizen Cider The Dirty Mayor. Just apple cider, ginger, lemon peel and of course nature at her best.

Citizen Cider The Dirty Mayor

The Dirty Mayor is a non-traditional cider available year-round on draft, 16oz. cans, 22oz. bottles, 5 gal. and 50L kegs. The only ingredients are apple cider pressed at Happy Valley Orchard (Middlebury, VT), ginger, lemon peel and obviously yeast. No added sugar, never from concentrate and weighs in at 5.2% ABV.

Appearance

Tight carbonation, straw yellow in color. Remarkably like sparkling cider (ha-ha)!

Aroma

Lemon peel up front with freshly grated ginger notes slightly muted on the back. I detected some sweetness.

Taste

Sweet up front, hitting apple, lemon and ginger ramps up in intensity especially in the finish. More sweetness than I had expected, but dry enough to enjoy with food…would love some Thai or Vietnamese now.

Mouthfeel

The balance of sweet and spice along with the small, scrubbing bubbles provides for a pleasant, medium body and mouthfeel.

Overall

Very intriguing, as it is a non-traditional cider. I would love to know what cider apple varieties were used to make it, as they needed to not overpower the acidity and spice from the other ingredients. If you are living a gluten-free lifestyle and/or just wanted a departure from your traditional cider, I recommend seeking this out.
Cheers and remember:
